Overhearing a conversation, a young woman (straight) and a young man (gay). She tells a serpentine story about how her husband left her and how she held back her tears at the airport, only to cry inconsolably in her apartment. Way she tells it, the man finds it funny. They both laugh, she in a more resigned manner than him, having already had some time pass since the airport.

"So, I'm kind of a mess, my husband left me and I've been crying my eyes out, huge, snot-inducing, eye-swelling tears", she says, in summary.

"You should listen to Madonna. There's this great song she has."

Wipe Out

One second I am riding my bike down Market St, going left to get out of the way of a bus that's pulling out of a stop. Next second I'm bleeding from my face, horrified sanfranciscans pulling me up on the street.

I figured I'd go around the bus, but realized I can't make it back to the sharrow in front of it, so I decided I'd go further left, around the streetcar stop. Watch out for the tram tracks, slippery because it was kind of raining. Good, made it. Now it's time to go back to the sharrow lane, watch out for the tracks again, make sure you come at an angle because your skinny wheels can get stuck in the groove. Clear those, but then the front tire slips on a metal grate and down I go.

I slam my face on the grate. I try to get up, but I can't because I'm stunned. Can't see properly. People pull me out of the street to the side. Blood. They take care of my stuff until the medics come. Some guy is taking pictures of me with his iPhone. Medics see my face and say, whoa. Everyone says, whoa. I am lucid in the ambulance, I know what day it is. Scared. The medics take care of me, they're friendly, reassuring. I will be okay, they say.

And I am. A little bruised, some stitches, but okay. I'm okay.

Yeah, just tried to get a cool shot of a bloody ring.

Bike To Work Day

A street event in San Francisco that nobody dresses up for? Just as I was saying that they're--ah, whatever. Anyway, BTWD 2010. Big deal, you know, everybody riding bikes, boo cars, boo potholes, yay bike lanes blah blah. But they give you free coffee and swag at Energizer Stations and you can get your bike maintained, too. Nice way to start the day. Though I bike to work most every day, some peeps bit the bullet and pedaled down to the Peninsula (here's looking at you, Janne!)

They painted green bike lanes on Market St. Yay!

Sign this petition for life imprisonment to everyone who drives a car. Yay!

San Francisco loves to dress up for any reason. This was some street fair thing on Howard Street (geddit? "How Weird" Street Fair?) and much reminiscent of Burning Man. The crazies flocked together, and word was they tried to break the world record for most people dancing a Bollywood choreography. Sadly, the choreography didn't look too hot, and, frankly, not really world record numbers showed up. Still, why not close off traffic for six hours in downtown S.F. on a Sunday?

Yikes.

I don't know, man. Meow?

Every festival/street fair/costume party seems to have Utilikilts, Opulent Temple and Hula Hoops.

A girl was sitting in the middle of the street, looking stunned as she touched her head to check for blood. Her scooter was to her side, jammed under the front end of an SUV. Cars slowed down to go around her. Plastic, glass and metal everywhere. Two people sat with her and waited for the paramedics. Her red aluminum water bottle had rolled to the curb. She was in shock, but seemed intact. Soon they took her to the ER, while the cops stayed for the tow truck. Nobody remembered to take her bottle.

SF Weekly--which I use to check who's playing in town--threw a shindig at one of the hottest shindig spots in the city, 111 Minna Gallery. This was a tech launch thingie with lots of tech types and business cards. I semi-crashed the party, which was interesting in that I got a look at SF mingling. "Eh," with a Gallic shrug. Robert Crumb prints on the walls, though.

Weekly, in a bitter fight with the Bay Area Guardian over the mastery of free weekly publications.

Hey, it was BYOBW!!!!! craziness on Potrero Hill! It rained like a motherfucker on the day of Bring Your Own Big Wheel, but that gave nobody no nevermind, as peeps had been building their rides and making their costumes. The point? To go down a curvy hill--down Vermont--on big wheels (kids' toys, basically) and look awesome while doing it. This was the 10th annual BYOBW, great stuff!

At The Roller Derby

We've gotten kind of into the roller derby scene in the Bay Area. On Saturday, The ShEvil Dead of S.F. took on the Oakland Outlaws ("whoo-whoo" to Jane Hammer, 777!) at Fort Mason and after a super-tight bout, Oakland took it home 103-106. Big ups, but we'll get you next time. ("Whoo-whoo" also to the "Blue Collar Special": A shot and a PBR=$5. Hello, Mr. Advil.)
