Oh, snap! Another flight later and I find myself with Ulla and Alex in Denver, CO. Was super disappointed that they didn't play the theme song for Dynasty at the airport on repeat, but they did have other weirdness. Like, the runway is in the shape of a Swastika and there are creepy gargoyles around. And there's a giant statue of a blue horse with gleaming red eyes. Scary!

And so we went to Boulder. A cool town full of hippies and real cheap parking tickets (don't ask.) We got this weird Japanese ice cream / pastry thing at a place called Smooch. 'Coz that's how we roll.

Mochi! The Japanese, huh?

Meanwhile, back at the Denver airport, this.

Zing! In two shakes I was transported to the Pacific Northwest, to ~~Portland, OR,~~ Vancouver, WA, where Trevor was getting ready to show me a great time. Now, Trevor is a serious cook. The guy had smoked an entire chicken for us. We ate. We drank. We laughed. And that was only the first night!

Is that a delicious smokey&spicy salad I see you holding there? It sure is!

Motherfuckers beware. Later he slaughtered the fattest calf for us. Kidding!

Mmm, bison. Mmm, veggies.

Moving On

Last days in San Francisco were a total blast. Birthdays, improv theater, eating out, getting drunk, Carnaval, craziness of all sorts. The fucking Golden Gate turned 75 years old. And we were too lazy to head out to watch it. "It'll be on YouTube," was the prevalent feeling about it. I'm sure it was (and is) and I'm fine. Instead, we got this:

'Tonight you sleep in hell!' (You thought I was going to do the other one, didn't you?)

Ha! We laughed, me and Sami and Lilli did. Such one-liners. Such sword-fighting. Such shitty acting!

But the DVD brings me to another point. The Lost Weekend video store on Valencia. Great place, to which I only have to offer you one piece of evidence.

Put that cookie down!

And that was it. San Francisco was ready to be left behind in one more day. And I was fine with all of it. I saw everyone (but one) and got to hang out with all you guys. The best times.

A little bit of detective work got me connected with this guy again! Mark, a rider of bicycles, is a friend Janne and I made at American Cyclery couple years back. You have a question on bikes, talk to this guy. Or on surface physics. Really happy to see him again after all this time. We hooked up over brunch at Boogaloos on Valencia. Nice weather, good food, and great company--couldn't ask for more. Cheers, Mark!

'Course, any trip to San Francisco would be incomplete without seeing these two cats. Jeremy and Lauren, always tons of fun, and friends who stick with ya. Like Jeremy said, we're like DVDs on pause--you'll hit play and pick right up where you left off. Greatest times, guys!

If you ever feel like having a straight edge taken to your face, I know just the guy. First visited Louie's Barbershop on Castro back in 2009 on a road trip. I wanted to get an American shave and a little asking around got me this address. And when I was last staying in the city, Don was in charge of my hair, and no one else. A gentleman and a master barber.

Don, the sweetest guy. With facial hair like none other.

So, this place is the real thing. Been around since the 1930's and still going strong. Black and white diamond tile flooring, old school chairs, total walk-in--this is the good stuff. And I can't go on about the shave long enough. Lather, hot towel, straight edge razor, with some Bay Rum to finish it all up. (Bay Rum is supposedly the only fragrance that can overpower cigar smoke. Snap!)

Old school. Good times.

Shit! Who knew that I'd be back in the city some 20 months later? Not I. Places to go, people to see--the Finnish Mafia was immediately up for a few drinks. A section of them had actually dressed as Smurfs for me, a nice touch. (Not really for me. Bay to Breakers.)

SFCS once again. For a few days.

So, once I got into town I knew I had to get me a bike (and helmet, yeah) and Raphael stepped up. He had a crazy giant monster of a road bike (dude's "a short six-foot-six") with a flat lying around and he was kind enough to fix it up for me. 'Cause that's the kind of guy he is. Cheers!
